Just Do It Anyway
Do It Anyway
I wish I could tell you that confidence always comes first. That one day you'll wake up and suddenly feel completely ready.
Ready to speak up. Ready to take the opportunity. Ready to walk into the room. Ready to have the conversation. Ready to do the thing you've been thinking about for months.
But that's usually not how confidence works. Sometimes you have to be nervous and do it anyway.
Stop Waiting to Feel Ready
How many things have we put off because we tell ourselves, "I'm just not confident enough yet"? Maybe once I know more. Maybe once I have more experience. Maybe once I'm sure I won't fail.
Here's the problem. That day may never come.
Confidence isn't always something we find before we act. Sometimes it's something we build because we acted.
You do the thing. You survive it. Maybe it goes really well, maybe it doesn't. Either way you learn something, and the next time you're a little more prepared. A little less afraid. A little more willing to try again.
That's how confidence grows.
Courage and Confidence Aren't the Same Thing
I think we sometimes confuse the two. Confidence says, "I know I can do this." Courage says, "I have no idea if I can do this, but I'm going to try anyway."
You don't need confidence to take the first step. You just need enough courage to move while you're still uncertain.
And every time you do, you're collecting evidence. I handled that. I figured it out. I recovered from that mistake. I did something I wasn't sure I could do.
Maybe I can do hard things.
That's confidence being built.
Your First Time Isn't Supposed to Look Like Someone Else's Hundredth
This one gets us. We watch someone speak with ease, lead the meeting, run the business, work the room, and we think, "I could never do that like they do."
Maybe not. Yet.
You're comparing your beginning to someone else's years of practice. They probably weren't that smooth the first time either. We just weren't there to see it.
So give yourself permission to be new. To learn. To be uncomfortable. To not be perfect. You don't have to be great at something the first time to be brave enough to try it.
Confidence Is Built in Small Moments
You don't have to make some enormous leap. You just have to take one small step, and then another.
Speak up once in the meeting. Introduce yourself to the person you've wanted to meet. Ask the question. Make the phone call. Post the video. Submit the proposal. Apply for the position. Say yes to the opportunity, and say no when you need to.
Each one says the same quiet thing: I'm willing to trust myself enough to try.
And that's a pretty good place to start.
Do It Anyway
Maybe you're waiting to feel confident about something right now. What if confidence isn't the prerequisite? What if it's waiting for you on the other side of doing the thing?
You can be nervous and capable. Unsure and prepared. Afraid and brave at exactly the same time.
So whatever that thing is, you don't have to wait until the fear disappears. You don't have to wait until you're completely sure. You don't have to wait until you feel like the most confident person in the room.
Take the step. Say the thing. Try.
Do it anyway.
And then do it again.
That's how confidence gets built.
