Doors as Decisions - Every Choice Shapes What’s Next

DOORS Series - Post 1

December of 2025, I was fortunate to travel to Portugal with YGM and Quest Voyager … and some chamber friends! On the trip, in all of the towns and villages we visited, I was fascinated by the beauty and uniqueness of all of the doors. Recently, while going through photos on my phone I came across the pics of the doors and decided to do a Blog Series on “Doors” as it relates to us personally and our journey through this beautiful life.

Portugal has a way of slowing you down in the best possible way. The streets curve, the tiles shine, and the doors—oh, the doors—feel like they’re placed there just to make you stop and think. Tall, tiny, bold, weathered, colorful, plain… every single one has a presence.

Walking through Lisbon and Porto, I kept noticing how each door felt like a decision waiting to be made. Some looked inviting. Some looked intimidating. Some felt like they had a thousand stories behind them. And honestly? It reminded me so much of the choices we make in life and leadership.

Every transformation begins with a decision.
Every new opportunity starts with a choice.
Every next chapter starts by turning the knob and stepping forward.

And here’s the truth we don’t like to say out loud:
Some doors are easy to open.
Some we avoid for years.
And some we desperately hope someone else will open first.

But nothing changes until we choose.

Leaders, teams, organizations—everyone has moments when the door in front of them feels a little too heavy. Maybe it’s a boundary conversation. A new role. A strategy shift. A hard truth. A big dream. Or a habit we know we need to change but would rather pretend isn’t there.

But those doors aren’t roadblocks. They’re invitations.

Portugal reminded me that doors aren’t meant to be stared at. They’re meant to be opened. And the only way forward is through. So maybe the question isn’t, “What if I’m not ready?”
Maybe it’s, “What if this door is exactly what I’ve been waiting for?”

Here’s to choosing boldly, walking forward bravely, and trusting the beauty waiting on the other side of the door.

And if you or your team are standing in front of a “door” right now—needing clarity, direction, or courage to choose what’s next—this is exactly the kind of work I love helping people with through Starfish Partnerships. Sometimes the next step becomes easier when you don’t take it alone.
