What’s Behind the Door? — Leading When You Don’t Know the Outcome

Doors Series - Post 2

Some of the doors in Portugal look like something out of a storybook—carved wood, iron hardware, tiles framing the entrance. Others look simple, plain, or even a little worn down. But the thing I loved most was that you truly never know what’s behind them.

A tiny, weathered door might open into a courtyard full of orange trees.
A grand, ornate door might lead to a quiet hallway.
A simple door could open into a bustling café.

You just don’t know until you’re brave enough to step inside.

And that, to me, feels exactly like leadership.

So often, leaders think they must have all the answers before taking action. We want certainty. Guarantees. A preview. But leadership doesn’t come with a spoiler alert. It asks us to walk through the door without knowing exactly what’s on the other side.

Taking a chance on a new idea.
Investing in a partnership.
Starting a hard conversation.
Trusting a team member with something important.
Trying something new—even when the old way feels safer.

It’s uncomfortable, yes. But it’s also where growth lives.

The unknown is not the enemy.
Sometimes it’s the birthplace of the most beautiful possibilities.

Portugal reminded me that hesitation keeps us standing on the sidewalk, missing out on the magic inside. But courage—even the smallest step forward—opens doors that were meant for us long before we noticed them.

If there’s something in your world right now that feels uncertain, maybe it’s not a warning sign. Maybe it’s an invitation. A chance to discover what’s been waiting for you.

You don’t have to see it all clearly to take the next step.
Just be willing to open the door.

And if your team is navigating one of those “unknown” moments—new leadership, new goals, new challenges—I’d love to help guide the conversation. That’s what I do through Starfish Partnerships: help teams move forward with clarity, confidence, and connection.
