If You Want to Go Far… Go Together
There’s an African proverb that’s been around for ages, but it still hits home every time I hear it:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
And whew, isn’t that the truth?
Speed is tempting—especially for high-achievers, entrepreneurs, and leaders. We want quick wins, immediate results, and a neat little box checked off by the end of the day. I’ve lived that life. I know what it feels like to be the one charging ahead with a to-do list that stretches for miles. But I’ve also learned something even more valuable: real, lasting impact doesn’t happen in isolation.
In every role I’ve had—whether it’s been 30 years leading a chamber of commerce, speaking to business groups, or facilitating leadership retreats—I’ve seen what happens when people come together around a shared mission. Teams that build trust, communicate well, and appreciate each other’s unique strengths don’t just get farther… they grow deeper roots. They weather storms better. And they enjoy the journey more.
Going alone might get you there by lunchtime.
But going together? That gets you through the hard seasons. That brings celebration on the other side. That leaves a legacy.
In the chamber world, we see this play out with membership drives. It’s not one person doing all the asking—it’s a group of volunteers locking arms and reaching out to their networks. And when they succeed, it’s not just about numbers—it’s about relationships.
In nonprofits, going together might look like a board that finally steps up as true ambassadors, not just seat-fillers. It’s those “aha” moments in training where everyone realizes their role in carrying the mission forward.
In business, it’s building a team culture where people feel seen, heard, and valued—so they don’t just clock in, they buy in.
I’ve had the honor of working with teams that started out siloed, skeptical, or just plain tired. But when we slowed down long enough to build trust, uncover strengths, and align around purpose, something powerful happened. They didn’t just move forward—they started moving forward together. And they picked up momentum that no one person could have created alone.
So, if you’re feeling stuck…
If your board’s disengaged, your staff feels scattered, or your team’s been in survival mode…
Take a breath. Slow down. Look around.
Who do you need to bring with you?
What conversations haven’t you had yet?
Where can collaboration replace control?
You don’t have to do it all. And honestly? You’re not supposed to.
The good stuff—the impact, the relationships, the legacy—is in the going together.
And if you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay. That’s what I’m here for. Whether it’s a retreat, a CliftonStrengths session, or just an honest conversation over coffee, I’d love to help your team reconnect, refocus, and move forward—together.
